Essential Oils for Men
Essential oils have been in use nearly as long as man has been around to use them. Ancient cave paintings found in Lascaux, France dating back to 18,000 BCE, depict the use of healing plants by humans.
In the modern world, the use of aromatherapy and essential oils has been depicted as a feminine practice, but history paints a different picture.9
Essential oils, such as myrrh, sandalwood, and frankincense were highly coveted in ancient Egypt, used only by those of importance in ceremonies dating back to 4500 BCE. Egyptian pharaohs were said to use their own unique blend of these essential oils for a variety of reasons including sexual intimacy, and in preparation of war.9
Modern men may not need to prepare for war, but the use of manly essential oils in daily life can improve mood, increase libido, and act as a natural deodorant. For a list of the best essential oils for men, read on below.

Essential Oil Cologne
With so many products going onto your skin every day, it makes sense to wonder about the ingredients in cologne. Some commercial companies use essential oils for cologne, but it’s usually in combination with several other unpronounceable ingredients, and at an exorbitant cost.
Once you know how to make cologne with essential oils, you can skip the large price tags and unidentifiable additives, and enjoy the masculine scents you love without breaking the bank.
To make your own homemade cologne, combine 10 drops of your selected fragrance, (ie. 3 drops bergamot, 3 drops sandalwood, 4 drops pine), with 300ml of 70% vodka alcohol.
Mix well, and pour into a glass spray bottle, or other cologne applicator. Shake before use, and spray sparingly, as the scent may be stronger than commercial colognes.
Extracted from the bark of the cedar tree, the aroma of cedarwood essential oil offers one of the most masculine scents on the market. Woody and slightly sweet, a cedar based cologne will conjure images of hiking, camping, and fall foliage.
Cedarwood cologne pairs well with other woody essential oils, such as pine, rosewood, and bergamot essential oil.

Sweet, earthy, and strong, men’s patchouli fragrance may remind you of digging in the dirt, backpacking through the countryside, and getting back to nature. As a cologne, patchouli essential oil blends well with sandalwood for men, and vetiver to accentuate its exotic notes.
A great patchouli cologne recipe includes 5 drops of patchouli essential oil, 3 drops of sandalwood essential oil, 2 drops of orange essential oil, and 300ml of 70% vodka alcohol. While using straight essential oil of patchouli for men may be more traditional, the added orange essential oil will brighten this earthy cologne, mixing exotic spice with sharp notes of citrus.

While the aroma of lavender essential oil is often associated with women, when mixed with rosemary, peppermint, or lemon essential oil, lavender scent men’s cologne can become extremely masculine.
Men’s lavender cologne exudes hints of bright sweetness, often combined with a sharp woody, or citrus aroma.
Rugged and woody, pine essential oil for men provides a masculine scent that mixes well with cedar and lavender essential oils. To add a touch of citrus to these woody essential oils, introduce a few drops of bergamot to your homemade cologne.

Minty and spicy, the fragrance of peppermint essential oil is one often thought as one of the best essential oils for men. For a small batch of peppermint cologne, which you can rub on after a shower, add 3 drops of peppermint essential oil to 6 drops of almond oil for men.

Vetiver Cologne Recipe
Native to India, vetiver essential oil is known to take on many scents, changing with each batch from earthy and green to zesty and lemony. One of the best cologne recipes including this unique essential oil mixes 4 drops of lemon essential oil, 4 drops of vetiver essential oil, and 2 drops of patchouli essential oil with 350 ml of 70% vodka alcohol.

For an aromatic bath, add 2 drops of each essential oil to hot, running water. Mix well before climbing in.
Essential Oils for Beards
Jojoba oil is known to be a natural moisturizer for hair and skin, and is an additive in some commercial products for this reason. Combining jojoba oil with the moisturizing properties of chamomile essential oil may help skin retain moisture while adding softness to beard hair.
Lavender beard oil also works well, in place of the chamomile, and has the added benefit of being one of the essential oils for beard growth. In a 1998 study, researchers applied lavender, cedarwood, rosemary and thyme essential oils to the skin of patients suffering from alopecia areata.
The trial included 86 patients over a period of 7 months. Participants who used the essential oils saw a significant improvement of hair growth compared to a control group, highlighting the hair-related lavender effects on males.10

To reap the benefits of both oils, along with the masculine scent of others, combine 1 oz. jojoba oil, 1 Tbsp. coconut oil, 5 drops of lavender or chamomile essential oil, and 3 drops cedarwood essential oil in a small glass bottle.
Mix well, and apply to clean fingers, before massaging gently through the beard. One or two small drops on the fingertip will do. Store the bottle in a cool, dark place.
Essential Oils for Premature Ejaculation
Premature ejaculation occurs when a man reaches orgasm soon after sexual activity starts; for some, it may occur before penetration, or physical penile stimulation begins. According to a study published in the Journal of European Urology, premature ejaculation affects 20-30% of men, and can be a biological or neurological issue.1
Following a physical examination by a health care professional, premature ejaculation is typically treated with topical anesthetic, or selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (antidepressants). The treatment will depend on the cause of the disorder.1
Some men prefer to use home remedies for premature ejaculation, over pharmaceuticals, which may contain chemicals, and other harmful ingredients. Essential oils have become a safe, natural alternative for the treatment of erectile dysfunction due to their physiological and neurological benefits.
Some premature ejaculation oil reportedly provides feelings of calmness or relaxation, while others offer topical sensations to reduce early climax.
Clove Premature Ejaculation
In a 2010 report on the benefits of clove essential oil, researchers examined its many healing characteristics. The report explains that clove essential oil is an anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, and can be used for stress release.
Among the many ailments it is said to relieve, premature ejaculation by topical application of the essential oil is one. In fact, the paper advises that clove oil premature ejaculation relief is so common that the essential oil is one of many ingredients in popular premature ejaculation creams sold in pharmacies.2
Unless under the direction of a doctor, you should never apply essential oil directly to your genitals. To receive the healing benefits of clove for premature ejaculation, massage into the lower abdomen and upper thighs in a mixture of 4 drops of essential oil to 12 drops of jojoba oil.
This massage oil for men can also be mixed with sweet almond oil.
Lavender Oil for Premature Ejaculation
While there is minimal research to suggest that lavender essential oil has a physical effect on premature ejaculation, it has been proven to counteract some of the neurological symptoms which cause it.
In a 2011 study, lavender essential oil was tested on 30 healthy participants, who inhaled the aroma of the essential oil while under the pain and duress of needle insertion. Results showed that there was a significant decrease in stress and anxiety levels by those who used the aromatherapy, over those who did not.3
Premature ejaculation can occur for many reasons, including stress. To lower your anxiety levels before sexual activity, add 3 drops of lavender essential oil per 100ml of water to a steam diffuser. Allow the calming floral scent to envelope you, and enjoy.

Winter Savory Oil for Premature Ejaculation
Winter savory, Satureja montana, is native to the Mediterranean, and has been used traditionally to treat health ailments, such as premature ejaculation. In a 2011 study, researchers proceeded to test the sexual response to winter savory essential oil in test subjects.
The participants received an oral dosage of winter savory extract for 8 consecutive days, with a positive result. Test subjects had a delayed rate of ejaculation, with no negative side effects.4

Essential Oils Testosterone
Not only are essential oils helpful in taming beards and preventing premature ejaculation, some essential oils stimulate the natural production of testosterone in men. In a 2006 animal study, test subjects were administered oral doses of savory essential oil (Satureja khuzestnica) for 45 days.
Following the study, test subjects had higher levels of testosterone, and an increase in the size of testes.5 More research is necessary before essential oils for testosterone can be applied to humans in this fashion, but it provides insight on the future of testosterone research in mammals.
To use essential oils for low testosterone, consider stressors in your daily life which may disrupt healthy hormone production. Sleep deprivation, anxiety, and poor nutrition can all affect testosterone over time. In a 2006 study, researchers looked at the affects of lavender essential oil on insomnia and depression over a four-week period.
The study included college students, and the results concluded that inhaling the lavender fragrance made a significant difference on mood, and improved sleeping habits.6
You can include aromatherapy in your daily routine to assist with proper hormone production by adding 3 drops of lavender essential oil per every 100ml of water, to a steam diffuser.
Essential Oils for Muscle Growth
Body building requires dedication, proper nutrition, adequate sleep, and sore muscle care. Some essential oils are known to ease pain, and promote relaxation; this is helpful for those who want to build muscle.
In a 2007 pilot study, researchers studied the affects of lavender, rosemary, and peppermint essential oils on the shoulder pain of 30 stroke patients. The group was split into two, with one half receiving acupressure therapy, and the other half receiving a combination of acupressure and aromatherapy.
The results reported a positive reaction for patients who received the combination treatment, over those who received acupressure therapy alone.7
Essential oils for muscle building work two ways; applied topically in the form of a rub, or inhaled as a form of aromatherapy. You can create your own muscle rub by mixing two Tbsp. of coconut oil with 1 drop lavender essential oil, 1 drop rosemary essential oil, and 2 drops peppermint essential oil. Mix well, and apply by rubbing into sore muscles.
