Essential Oils for Diabetes

Diabetes is a term given to a metabolic disorder brought on by a wide range of causes. Diabetes is characterized by chronic hyperglycemia with disturbances of carbohydrate, fat, and protein metabolism.

These symptoms are a result of defects in insulin secretion, insulin action, or both. The effects of diabetes can be quite serious, causing long-term damage, dysfunction, and failure of various organs.

Common symptoms associated with diabetes include thirst, polyuria (frequent urination), blurred vision, and weight loss. The symptoms of diabetes are commonly not severe, or may even be absent. This may result in pathological or functional changes in the body – due to hyperglycemia – being present for a long time before diagnosis.

Diabetes increases the risk of cardiovascular, peripheral vascular, and cerebrovascular disease in people diagnosed with the condition.1

Type 1 indicates the process of beta-cell destruction that can ultimately lead to diabetes. The body’s immune system eliminates the cells which naturally produce insulin. Insulin controls the blood’s glucose levels, and helps prevent the body from developing ketoacidosis, or even slipping into a coma.

Type 1 is characterized by the presence of anti-GAD, islet cell, or insulin antibodies which identify the autoimmune processes that lead to beta-cell destruction.1

Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of the disease. This type is characterized by disorders of insulin action and insulin secretion, either one being the predominant feature. Both disorders are commonly present at the time that type 2 diabetes is clinically manifested.1

Essential Oils for Type 1 Diabetes

If you are looking for a natural remedy for diabetes, essential oils may be the solution, or used in conjunction with other medicinal treatment. Many of the health benefits associated with essential oils correlate with symptoms brought on by diabetes.

Below is a list of 3 essential oils for type 1 diabetes. Use these essential oils for high blood sugar levels, and to help improve your immune system.

The Best Essential Oils for Type 1 Diabetes are:

Coriander Essential Oil

Frankincense Essential Oil

Ylang Ylang Essential Oil

Coriander for Type 1 Diabetes

Also known as cilantro, coriander (Coriandrum sativum L.) is a spice cultivated around the world. Coriander seeds have been used to help treat diabetes, indigestion, and joint pain. Coriander essential oil, which is extracted from the seeds, may harness similar medicinal properties.

Read More: Essential Oils for Pain

A 2009 study showed coriander seed extract to significantly increase the insulin release activity of beta cells in the pancreas. This data shows promise for future use of coriander essential oil for diabetes.2

If you are looking for natural remedies for insulin resistance, coriander oil for diabetes may be the right oil for the job. Because cells that make insulin are found in the pancreas, use coriander essential oils for pancreas health.

Frankincense to Help with Diabetes

Frankincense (olibanum) is taken from gum resins of Boswellia trees, and frankincense essential oil is extracted through steam distillation of this resin. One of frankincense essential oil’s benefits is its ability to stimulate the immune system.

A boosted immune system may provide relief from the body’s insulin resistance, ultimately helping to relieve the weakened immune system symptom of type 1 diabetes.

By stimulating the immune system, frankincense oil may also help in balancing blood sugar, because high blood sugar often affects the immune system and vice versa.

Ylang Ylang for Diabetes Symptoms

Ylang Ylang (cananga odorata) is a tropical tree most commonly found in Indonesia and Malaysia. Ylang Ylang essential oil is extracted from the flower petal of the tree. The benefits of Ylang Ylang essential oil include being able to reduce systolic blood pressure and reduce heart rate.

The essential oil has also been used as a treatment for patients prone to heart palpitations and hyperventilation. Because those with diabetes often have increased blood pressure, use ylang ylang essential oils to lower blood pressure levels.

Essential Oils for Type 2 Diabetes

Essential oils and diabetes may be linked as a natural remedy and medical condition. For helping to alleviate symptoms of diabetes, essential oils are beginning to grow in popularity as a natural alternative.

The Best Essential Oils for Type 2 Diabetes are:

Cinnamon Essential Oil

Lavender Essential Oil

Oregano Essential Oil

Cinnamon for Typte 2 Diabetes

Cinnamon (Cinnamomum zeylanicum) is an evergreen tree located in Sri Lanka, India, and Burma. Cinnamon has been shown to affect blood glucose and insulin signaling. A 2011 study looked to determine the effect of cinnamon extract on fasting blood glucose (high blood sugar levels) in people with type 2 diabetes and prediabetes.

The study found that taking cinnamon, as a whole or as an extract, displayed significant signs of fasting blood glucose being reduced. Through the inhalation of cinnamon essential oils, blood sugar levels may be reduced, because cinnamon extract improves fasting blood glucose in people with type 2 diabetes.3

So, if you are looking for essential oils for lowering blood sugar, choose cinnamon essential oil for diabetes.

Lavender for Symptoms of Type 2 Diabetes

Lavender (Lavandula) is a plant native to the mountainous areas of the Mediterranean, and is cultivated from the fresh purple flowers to make lavender essential oil. Lavender essential oil has many benefits, and has been shown to decrease heart rate and blood pressure, which may help alleviate some of the symptoms of type 2 diabetes.

Often, people with diabetes have high blood pressure, and are then at a higher risk of heart disease, stroke, or other health issues. Lavender may then be one of many essential oils to lower triglycerides by the way in which the oil helps to relax the body.

A buildup of these natural fats and oils elevate the risk of heart disease and stroke. As a natural remedy to help manage type 2 diabetic symptoms, lavender oil and diabetes have been commonly associated together.

Oregano Essential Oil and Diabetes

Oregano (Origanum vulgare L.) belongs to the Lamiaceae plant family. Oregano essential oil is extracted through steam distillation of the leaves and flower tops of the oregano plant.

Oregano oil and diabetes have been the subject of many medicinal studies. In a 2006 study, oregano was one of 7 clonal lines from single seed phenotypes of the Lamiaceae family tested for management of diabetes and hypertension.

Out of the 7, oregano displayed the highest alpha-glucosidase inhibition activity. Alpha-glucosidase inhibitors are drugs used to treat type 2 diabetes by preventing the digestion of carbohydrates.4 By using oil of oregano, diabetes symptoms for type 2 may be reduced.

How to use Essential Oils for Diabetes

Use any of the above listed essential oils in aromatherapy for diabetes. Adding 10-15 drops of essential oil to your home diffuser is a great way to try and harness the benefits of essential oils for diabetes. You should never ingest essential oils unless you have been specifically instructed to do so by a qualified professional.

Essential Oils for Diabetic Neuropathy

Diabetic neuropathy is a frequent complication of both type 1 and type 2 diabetes; it affects over 90% of patients diagnosed with diabetes. One of the main symptoms associated with diabetic neuropathy is pain.

The development of this complication is widely believed to be linked to the toxic effects of hyperglycemia. However, although there have been great advancements in understanding the pathophysiological mechanisms leading to the development of diabetic neuropathy, there is still no proven hypothesis explaining why some patients get the painful form of the disease while others do not.5

The essential oils lavender and frankincense have been linked with the ability to help control pain, and may provide relief from pain brought on by diabetic neuropathy.

Lavender and frankincense may also be useful essential oils for diabetic feet, a condition where either pain or swelling occurs in the feet due to blood vessel and peripheral nerve constrictions.

Although rosemary essential oil and thyme essential oil have been linked with pain control, it is recommended to avoid these essential oils if you have diabetes.

Patients diagnosed with diabetes are susceptible to high blood pressure, and any substance that may increase heart rate or blood pressure should be avoided.

Essential Oils for Dogs

Essential oils have been used as effective natural alternatives for treating a wide range of physical and mental health concerns. Essential oils contain many therapeutic properties such as anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and soothing qualities that can be used as an alternative to pharmaceutical products.

Since human physiology has been shown to benefit from essential oil use, it begs the question – can you use essential oils on dogs?

It’s an easy question, but one with a relatively complicated answer. The relationship between dogs and essential oils is convoluted, and made even more so by a wide variety of holistic pet products that contain potentially harmful essential oils.

Dogs do not have the same biology as humans, and should not be expected to react the same way.

You May Also Like: Essential Oils for Cats

To conduct aromatherapy for dogs, essential oils can either be diffused or applied. Diffusion is generally considered the safest and most mild application.

For topical application, essential oils should always be heavily diluted before applying to the animal. Always take extra precautions with essential oils and dogs to prevent accidental ingestion.

Note: Using essential oils for pets can be dangerous, as some essential oils can be harmful to animals. Extreme caution should be used when treating or dealing with dogs and essential oils. Safety guidelines concerning essential oils for animals differ significantly based on the animal itself. Always consult a veterinarian before treating your pets with any essential oil, even if it is considered safe.

Melissa Shelton and Essential Oils for Dogs

The leading voice concerning essential oils and animal treatment is Dr. Melissa Shelton, vet and internationally recognized holistic medicine author and advocate. Shelton has published a number of books concerning the use of essential oils for animals, and has devoted herself to researching and treating pets with holistic alternatives.

Medical grade essential oils, natural whole food supplements, and a bevy of other natural health practices are the tools used by Shelton. Animal hospital and dental clinic owner, she has been successfully treating pets and animals for years, many of whom could not be treated successfully by traditional medicines. Dr. Shelton is the go-to source when it comes to essential oils and pets.

Below, Essential Oil Experts has complied an easy to use essential oil guide to help keep your dog healthy, happy and safe while using essential oil products.

Essential Oils for Fleas

In recent years, essential oils have been used as natural alternatives for flea removal on pets, instead of traditional shampoos or chemical-based flea collars. Today, there are several products that use essential oils for fleas and ticks on the market.

The most common essential oils for fleas on dogs are juniper essential oil, cedarwood essential oil, citronella essential oil and thyme essential oil.9

Juniper essential oil has been reported to be used by veterinarians in everyday practice, and is known for its natural insecticidal properties. Citronella and thyme based products are both considered a natural and safe tick repellent for dogs.5,9 Essential oils for ticks on dogs should always be used in low concentrations, especially with collars and essential oil flea spray.

Products using cedarwood essential oils for fleas and ticks do exist, but these must be sourced carefully. Users should ensure the product uses Eastern Red Cedar (Juniperus virginiana) essential oil, as oil from White Cedar (Melia azedarach) can be toxic.12 Be careful to check the label thoroughly before using cedar essential oil for fleas.

Lavender essential oil flea spray and tick control products are effective, but the concentration needs to be verified before being used. Lavender can be toxic for dogs, and should only be used in very low concentrations.

Essential Oils for Dog Arthritis

If your dog is suffering from arthritis, there are alternatives to pharmaceutical painkillers and anti-inflammatories. Of the essential oils for arthritis, frankincense essential oil has been noted as one of the best.

In a 2012 study, frankincense essential oil was shown to improve symptoms of canine inflammation and arthritis in 71% of animal subjects. With natural anti-rheumatic arthritis and anti-inflammatory properties, frankincense essential oil may help soothe your aging pet.14

Essential Oils for Itchy Dogs

As one of the common canine ailments, itchy skin can cause extreme irritation for dogs. You can use essential oils for dogs itching to provide natural relief. To date, there is limited scientific research on the effectiveness of essential oils for dogs’ itchy skin.

Anecdotally, helichrysum essential oil has been used to help soothe itchy skin and heal canine wounds. Considered a non-toxic plant to dogs, helichyrsum essential oil is featured in one of Dr. Shelton’s products.13

There are many topical treatment products that use lavender, chamomile, and marjoram essential oils for dogs’ itchy skin, but these are potentially toxic and should be avoided.1, 6, 7

Calming Essential Oils for Dogs

The best way to use essential oils for calming dogs is via aromatherapy. A dog’s nose is more sensitive than our own and is a huge part of how your canine friend perceives the world.

Using essential oils to calm dogs can be a safe and effective way to naturally alter your pet’s mood. Any product or mixture that has relaxing properties can be used as calming oils for dogs. Lavender essential oil and frankincense essential oils are particularly pleasant essential oils to calm dogs via diffusion.

Note that lavender is toxic when applied topically or ingested by your dog, but it has been reported that it is safe to be inhaled via a diffuser. You should monitor your pets carefully when applying essential oils either topically or via inhalation.

You can also use aromatherapy essential oils for anxiety in dogs. This may be especially useful for breeds that suffer from stress or tension related conditions. With anti-anxiety and stress-relieving properties, lavender and bergamot essential oil are particularly effective essential oils for dog anxiety.

Simply diffuse the essential oils in an open, indoor space with your dog, making sure they do not ingest or come into contact with the essential oils. Dogs are just like people, some may just not like certain fragrances, regardless of their holistic properties.

Essential Oils for Dogs’ Skin

Canine skin is prone to dryness and irritation just the same as ours. While there may be several possible essential oils for dogs’ dry skin, helichrysum essential oil mixed with almond or coconut carrier oils may provide soothing relief. Some dog owners have applied 1-2 diluted drops of this oil topically to their pet’s affected area to help moisturize and reduce irritation.

Take care when using essential oils for dog skin problems, as allergic reactions to the oils can make matters worse. Always consult with a veterinarian before using essential oil products on your pet.

Essential Oils for Dogs’ Ears

Your dog’s hearing and ear health is important, and there are a few effective essential oils for ear mites in dogs that will help keep their ears in top shape. In vivo clinical studies have shown that one of the most effective essential oils for dog ear infection is oregano essential oil as its natural anti-microbial and anti-fungal properties can safely help fight off infection.9
</sup>

While these products were applied directly to the ears of the dog, allowed to sit briefly, and then were flushed out, users should not attempt to do this and home. Always consult with a veterinarian before using essential oils in a dog’s ear.

Essential Oils for Dog Hot Spots

Hot spots are a form of skin irritation that may be caused from an allergic reaction, mites or fleas, infection, or simply stress.

While clinical data is lacking, helichrysum and frankincense essential oil for dogs’ hot spots and skin conditions have been used by pet owners as topical treatments. After confirming the use of these oils with your veterinarian, use essential oils for hot spots on dogs by diluting 1-2 drops of essential oil with at least 1 Tbsp. of carrier oil, such as coconut oil, and gently apply to the affected area.

Essential Oils for Dog Skin Allergies

Using essential oils for allergies in dogs is a tricky proposition as essential oil carries the risk of being an allergen itself. The potential harm from unforeseen complications means it can be dangerous to use essential oils for dogs with allergies, particularly for skin irritation.

Because your dog already has a skin condition, consult with your veterinarian before using an essential oil on its skin to avoid further irritation.

Essential Oils for Dog Odor

Dogs are lovable, but sometimes their smell is anything but. Whether it’s wet dog smell, or other undesirable fragrances, essential oils can offer pleasant odor relief.

To use essential oils for dog odor, dilute 1-2 drops of citronella essential oil into at least 11 oz. of water and gently mist areas that your dog has left odors on, to help mask and eliminate undesirable scents.

Essential Oils for Dog Bad Breath

In recent years, there has been some scientific investigation into the use of essential oils for dogs’ bad breath which have shown some promising findings. In a 2013 study, pepper-rosmarin essential oil was noted to have natural antimicrobial properties, believed to be caused by the high levels of thymol in the essential oil.

When a diluted pepper-rosmarin essential oil mouthwash was given to dogs, it significantly reduced bad breath, helped fight gingivitis and promoted a healthy canine mouth.3

Essential Oils for Seizures in Dogs

At this time, there is no publicly available clinical research on treating seizures or epilepsy in dogs using essential oil products. Therefore, it cannot be recommended to treat canine seizures using essential oils without veterinary consultation.

Veterinarian Dr. Melissa Shelton, expert on essential oils and pets, has previously suggested using a product that contains a mixture of frankincense, ocotea, ruta, dorado and ylang ylang essential oils, to treat seizures, anxiety, and neurological conditions in dogs.13

Safe Essential Oils for Dogs

There are a lot of contradictory claims regarding essential oils and pets. Many products available on the market contain essential oils bad for dogs, and finding credible information about safe essential oils for dogs can be difficult.

Dogs and their immune systems are very different from our own. Just because a product is harmless to humans, doesn’t mean it will be harmless for dogs as well.

Today, there are a select number of essential oils safe for dogs, including frankincense, helichrysum, and lemon essential oils. Many other essential oils can be toxic unless diluted properly, so it is always advised to consult with your veterinarian before use on pets.

Lavender Oil on Dogs

Some pet owners may wonder ‘is lavender safe for dogs?’ According to American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), lavender is toxic and should not be ingested by dogs.1

Despite this, it is common to use lavender oil for dogs. Lavender oil for fleas and mite treatments is the most prevalent use, but can also be used for calming nervous dogs.

Topical application of lavender essential oil may cause an allergic reaction in dogs and increases the chance of ingestion, making it a potentially dangerous product for your pet. If your veterinarian approves, you may be able to try diffusing lavender as a safer method.

Is Eucalyptus Oil Safe for Dogs?

The ASPCA lists the eucalyptus plant and eucalyptus essential oil as poisonous to cats, dogs, and even horses. Keep eucalyptus-based products far from your pets.8

While many pet products use low concentrations of eucalyptus oil, fleas and mite infestation products in particular, these should never be used on your dog due to potential complications.

Frankincense for Dogs

One of the most versatile essential oils is frankincense, safe for dogs and used to treat a variety of ailments. Frankincense essential oil can be used to calm your dog via diffusion and can even help to manage arthritis pain.14

Is Peppermint Safe for Dogs?

With several beneficial properties and a highly appealing smell, pet owners may wonder ‘is peppermint bad for dogs?’

While using any form of peppermint for dogs can cause adverse reactions, peppermint essential oil in particular, is considered highly toxic.10 Flea sprays with peppermint essential oil have been reported to cause adverse reactions, such as agitation, anorexia, hypersalivation, lethargy, retching, seizures, tremors and vomiting.4 Applying any product that uses peppermint oil for dogs carries a risk of accidental ingestion and is not recommended.

Is Lemongrass Safe for Dogs?

According to the ASPCA, owners should never use lemongrass essential oil for dogs, as it is a toxic plant that becomes far more dangerous when used in essential oil form. The naturally occurring cyanogenic glycosides within the oil can lead to severe digestive issues in dogs. 2

Is Grapefruit Bad for Dogs?

Citrus essential oils, including grapefruit essential oil, can be toxic if ingested by your four-legged friend. Clinical signs of toxicity include vomiting, diarrhea or depression.11

Cedarwood Essential Oil for Dogs

Cedarwood essential oil needs to be carefully sourced to make sure that it is safe for your pet. Eastern red cedar essential oil can be used for dogs, but white cedar essential oil can be toxic.12

Essential Oils for Fertility

At least one in six couples need medical help for infertility at some point in their lives. The most common causes for fertility issues are lack of ovulation and sperm dysfunction.1 For female infertility, ovulating, regular menstrual cycles (lasting 21 to 35 days on average), and regular periods of 2-7 days are prerequisites for pregnancy.

Menstruation and ovulation are highly dependent on a well-balanced hormonal system, which can easily be impacted by external factors like stress, diet and exercise.2

The Top Essential Oils for Fertility are:

Ylang Ylang Essential Oil

Clary Sage Essential Oil

Geranium Essential Oil

Fennel Essential Oil

Cypress Essential Oil

Rose Essential Oil

It can be useful to try natural fertility treatments, like essential oils, to help get pregnant. Essential oils for conceiving can help regulate the body’s natural rhythm and decrease stress to combat infertility.

Using an essential oil diffuser can be especially effective in getting the mood just right, helping you relax, and ultimately promote fertility.

Essential Oils to Reduce Stress and Promote Fertility

To reduce stress, use fertility oils such as ylang ylang essential oil, clary sage essential oil, geranium essential oil, fennel essential oil, anise essential oil, cypress essential oil, and rose essential oil. These essentials oils for fertility decrease stress and anxiety and may aid in conception.

Topical application of these stress relief essential oils on the abdomen and lower back, and massage, are common ways to use essential oils to get pregnant.

Aromatherapy for infertility is another common method for reducing stress. Mix a few drops of essential oil into a diffuser to gain additional benefits from the aromas of these essential oils.

Finally, taking a bath before intercourse with any of the essential oils listed above, may help alleviate stress and serve as natural fertility aids.3

Essential Oils and Fertility: How to Help Regulate Menstruation

To help regulate menstruation, users can harness the natural benefits of lavender essential oil, clary sage essential oil, or rose essential oil to regulate periods and act as a natural medicine for ovulation. Lavender essential oil is thought to help relax muscles, improve circulation and stimulate menstruation.

Clary sage for fertility is believed to function like estrogen, helping to promote menstruation, normalize a female’s menstrual cycle, and strengthen the uterus. Rose essential oil is thought to help to regulate the menstrual cycle and to decrease heavy menstrual bleeding.5,6

Fennel and fertility are known to be complementary. Fennel and anise oils are also natural remedies for ovulation because of their similarity to estrogen, helping to promote menstruation for women with short periods and as a method for how to cure anovulation naturally. Anovulation occurs when the body fails to release an egg during the monthly cycle.4,7

Using Essential Oils to Encourage Fertilization

Essential oils for blocked fallopian tubes serve to increase vaginal secretions which help sperm to reach the fallopian tubes. In this method, a fertility massage oil should be applied to the lower back, breasts and lower abdomen of the female partner. Suggested oils include geranium, lavender and fennel essential oils.4

Essential Oils for PCOS

Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) may occur as a result of a hormonal imbalance and cause cysts filled with fluid to grow on a woman’s ovaries. Abnormal hormone levels from PCOS can cause a variety of symptoms including: painful, elongated periods, irregular menstruation, acne, and increased growth of facial and body hair.

PCOS is the most noted cause of infertility in women.2 Essential oils for polycystic ovaries may help to treat these symptoms, and to normalize the underlying hormonal imbalance.

Using essential oils such as white cedar, thyme and chamomile, fertility may be boosted due to their similarity to female reproductive hormones. These three PCOS essential oils mimic estrogen to help boost fertility.

In one study, thyme essential oil was found to decrease the size and number of ovarian cysts in test subjects.8 T. occidentalis, or white cedar essential oil, was also found to regulate estrogen levels in subjects with PCOS.9

In a case study, one women was noted to achieve regular menstruation and pregnancy by applying an essential oil blend that featured chamomile essential oil for a year.4

The beneficial properties of tea tree essential oil can be used to treat oily skin and acne brought on by PCOS. In addition to tea tree oil, fertility can be improved when irregular menstruation caused by PCOS is treated as above, with rose, fennel, anise oils and clary sage for fertility.

Note: Most of the existing clinical studies are based on ingesting essential oils, PCOS patients should not ingest these oils unless directed by a health care professional.

Essential Oils for Low Progesterone

Dill essential oil has been found to mitigate the effects of low progesterone. In a 2006 study, test subjects were administered a dose of dill essential oil. At the end of the study, researchers noted that progesterone levels had increased significantly.10

Use of progesterone essential oil has not been widely studied and should be used with caution and direction from your doctor or naturopath.

Essential Oils for Male Fertility

Male fertility issues can be caused by hormonal imbalances, which affect sperm quality and quantity.11 For male infertility, essential oils for men may be used to normalize hormones and stimulate sperm production.

In one study, Satureja khuzestanica (a middle-eastern plant of the rosemary and thyme family) essential oil increased testosterone and sperm production in test subjects.12 Essential oils for sperm count have been used medicinally in many ancient cultures.

The essential oil of Ruta chalepensis or fringed rue, a plant of the citrus family, was administered orally in an experimental study, and resulted in an increase in sperm count, motility, living percent, and a decrease in encountered sperm abnormalities.13

With the use of these fertility essential oils, couples are able to practice holistic fertility. Essential oils for reproductive health can help to regulate and normalize hormones for both males and females, meaning these home remedies for fertility may help to treat the causes and symptoms of infertility.

By harnessing the power of essential oils, fertility may no longer be an issue.

Essential Oils for Sore Throats

Strep throat is a condition that occurs when a person becomes infected with the Streptococcus bacteria, often after the onset of a common cold.1

Strep infection often results in a mild fever and a sore, red, swollen, throat that discharges pus; these uncomfortable symptoms may leave sufferers searching for ways to relieve strep throat pain.1

Fortunately for those suffering from strep throat, essential oils may be able to help. Using essential oils for strep throat offers an effective alternative to traditional treatment options.

What’s more, using essential oils for sore throat symptoms may also help in cases unrelated to the Streptococcus bacteria. Sore throats can be caused by multiple factors, including viral infections, which result in the throat becoming red, painful, and developing white or yellow sores.1

Luckily, a painful throat is not normally serious, and by using essential oil remedies to soothe strep throat and sore throats, sufferers may be able to avoid harsh over the counter medications and antibiotics.

Home Remedies for Strep Throat Without Antibiotics

When a person visits the doctor for help to relieve strep throat pain, the first course of action is often to prescribe antibiotics. However, there are other options for healing strep throat without antibiotics; it is possible to learn how to treat strep throat naturally.

Though antibiotics are a good treatment for many illnesses, they are not without negative side effects. Frequent use of antibiotics leads to many infections becoming antibiotic-resistant and more difficult to treat.

The growing number of antibiotic-resistant infections led to 50,000 deaths in the United States and Europe during 2015.2

Antibiotics can also negatively affect the healthy microorganisms living in a person’s body, making the body less able to access vitamins and nutrients, and resulting in a weaker immune system.2

Knowing the negative side effects of antibiotics may lead some people to search for a more holistic strep throat treatment. Fortunately, there are many strep throat herbal remedies, which have been observed to help fight Streptococcus.

Some of the best strep-fighting oils are cinnamon, eucalyptus, and clove essential oil—also effective essential oils for swollen tonsils. These and many other essential oils can be used in place of over the counter treatments for strep throat.

What Essential Oils are Good for a Sore Throat?

Using essential oils for sore throat and cough is an excellent alternative to traditional treatments. For those suffering from a sore throat, essential oils offer antimicrobial benefits, meaning they can help fight infection and possibly speed up healing.

For people wondering what essential oil is good for sore throat treatment, the information below explains the benefits of many oils that can be used as therapeutic aids.

Oregano Oil Sore Throat

When searching for what essential oil for sore throat treatment is best, oregano essential oil’s properties make it an excellent choice, as it has been observed to be a powerful antimicrobial agent.

A 2015 study found that oregano essential oil was effective at killing Klebsiella pneumoniae; bacterium that can cause pneumonia and lead to a dry cough that agitates the throat.3

Because of its antibacterial properties, using oil of oregano for sore throat healing is a natural and effective choice. It’s possible to use oregano oil for sore throat symptoms alone or to use oil of oregano for sore throat and cough treatment.

To best utilize oil of oregano for sore throat and cough, put 2-3 drops in a diffuser and inhale the steam, or dilute the oregano essential oil with a carrier oil and apply directly to the skin. Diffuse oregano oil and sore throat symptoms may improve.

For strep throat, oil of oregano may also be a useful remedy. To use oregano oil for strep throat, diffuse a few drops in a bowl of steaming water, or add to a nebulizer. For topical use, the oil can be mixed with a carrier oil and rubbed on the skin.

Thieves for Sore Throat

Another option is to use thieves oil for sore throat relief. Thieves essential oil is a blend of oils, including clove essential oil, cinnamon essential oil, lemon essential oil, rosemary essential oil, and eucalyptus essential oil.

All essential oils in the thieves blend have been found to have antimicrobial properties.6,9,10,11,12 More specifically, clove, cinnamon, and eucalyptus essential oils have been reported to fight Streptococcus pyogenes—the bacteria that causes strep throat.9,11,12

By using the potent essential oil blend of thieves, sore throat symptoms can be managed naturally. Using thieves essential oil for sore throat healing is an effective alternative to using antibiotics or other medications.

Peppermint Oil for Sore Throat

Known for its cooling sensation, the beneficial properties of peppermint essential oil make an excellent natural treatment for sore throats and may be an effective essential oil for itchy throat symptoms.

Additionally, peppermint essential oil is regularly used for providing relief from heat, for reducing congestion, and is an effective essential oil for colds and cough.

One reason this essential oil is useful for treating scratchy throats, is its natural anti-itch properties. A 2016 study found that peppermint essential oil reduced itchiness significantly in patients who suffered from chronic itching.4

This essential oil’s anti-itch properties make using oil of peppermint for sore throat relief an excellent choice, especially when the throat is scratchy and irritated.

Tea Tree Oil Sore Throat

For those seeking an essential oil to heal their throat ailments, using tea tree for sore throat relief may be an effective choice. While there are several benefits of tea tree essential oil, it has been observed to have potent antibacterial properties and has traditionally been used in medicine as an antiseptic.

A review in the journal of Clinical Microbiology Reviews reported that tea tree essential oil had potent antimicrobial and antiviral properties.5 The presence of antimicrobial properties suggests that by using tea tree oil, strep throat may be managed naturally. Also, through the use of tea tree, sore throat relief may be obtained.

One effective remedy includes using a tea tree oil gargle for sore throats. To use melaleuca oil for sore throat treatment, add 2 drops of oil to a cup of hot water and gargle, focusing on reaching the back of the mouth. Spit the mixture out once gargling is finished.

Tea tree is also one of the most suitable essential oils for scratchy throat relief, and the gargling remedy mentioned above is an excellent option for treatment.

Note: Tea tree essential oil can be dangerous if ingested and should never be taken internally. Consult a healthcare professional before using tea tree essential oil internally or as a gargle.

Clove Oil for Sore Throat

Clove is another excellent essential oil for sore throat healing. A 2006 study found that clove essential oil had antibacterial properties that can help inhibit the growth of different bacteria strains, including S. pyogenes.7 What’s more, clove essential oil also has analgesic (pain-relieving) properties.8

The antibacterial and pain-relieving properties of clove essential oil make it a great choice for treating sore throats.

Lemon Essential Oil for Sore Throat

Lemon is one of the best essential oils good for sore throat relief because of its pain-reducing properties. Lemon essential oil’s pain-managing abilities were observed in a 2011 study, which found that test subjects experienced a reduction in pain and inflammation when treated with lemon essential oil.9

Because sore throats often create significant discomfort, lemon essential oil’s anti-pain properties make it an excellent option for sore throat essential oil treatment.

Eucalyptus Oil for Sore Throat

Eucalyptus essential oil is also a suitable choice for treating sore throat and strep throat symptoms. Eucalyptus essential oil has antibacterial, antifungal, and antiviral properties and has been observed to effectively inhibit many microbes, including Streptococcus pneumoniae—a bacteria that can cause sore throats—and S. pyogenes.11

Based on the antimicrobial properties of eucalyptus oil, sore throat sufferers may benefit greatly from treatment with this oil.

Cinnamon Oil for Sore Throat

Of all the essential oils for throat health, cinnamon essential oil is one of the most powerful antibacterial agents.

A study published in the journal of Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine found that cinnamon essential oil was extremely effective at killing the S. pyogenes bacteria, which is responsible for strep throat.12

In fact, when tested against 17 other essential oils, cinnamon essential oil was most effective at killing the S. pyogenes bacteria, possibly making it the best essential oil for sore throat treatment.12

How to Treat Strep Throat at Home

Fortunately for those who wish to avoid antibiotics, there are many home remedies for strep throat symptoms using essential oils. One of the most effective and popular ways to relieve strep throat pain is to use aromatherapy for sore throat relief.

To use essential oils for a sore throat, add 2 drops each of cinnamon essential oil and peppermint essential oil in to a diffuser or a bowl of boiling water. Breathe deeply and inhale the aromatic steam to experience the benefit of the essential oils and sore throat relief.

For those interested in additional sore throat remedies, essential oils may also be applied topically.

To apply essential oils to the skin, first add 1-2 drops of the oil to 4 Tbsp. of a carrier oil, such as coconut or jojoba oil. Then, rub the blend into the skin of the throat.

Essential Oils for Labor and Birth

The third trimester is one of the most exciting and uncomfortable of a woman’s pregnancy. It includes the final months of a child’s fetal development, and can result in early labor, or an extended due date.

Women who have reached their expected delivery date, may choose to induce labor following a discussion with a doctor, if natural labor doesn’t occur. According to the American Family Physician, more than 13% of live births in the United States are induced each year.6

In traditional western medicine, doctors use a drug called Pitocin to induce labor in women who are unable to begin the process naturally. This medication imitates the hormone, oxytocin, to stimulate contractions. Your doctor may also need to manually break the amniotic sac, if your water hasn’t broken yet.6

Some women prefer not to use medicinal remedies to induce, and instead, rely on more natural methods. Using essential oils to induce labor is not a new practice, but is still being studied for its potential, as more evidence is required.

Aromatherapy can also be used to manage pain during and after the delivery, due to some oils hosting analgesic properties and promoting relaxation.2

Essential Oils to Induce Labor

The use of oils to induce labor doesn’t work for every woman, and each oil provides different qualities which help speed contractions and move you through the labor process. The top 3 aromatherapy oils to induce labour include clary sage, lavender, and rose essential oil.

Clary sage essential oil has natural chemical components which work to stimulate hormones, and cause menstruation to occur. For a woman who is 9 months pregnant, this same hormonal stimulation progresses labor.1

Lavender essential oil promotes relaxation, which can decrease labor times and promote a fast delivery.2 Using rose essential oil to induce labor works by speeding up contractions and decreasing the length of labor.3

Essential oils for inducing labor are applied topically in the form of massage, or inhaled using a steam diffuser. For topical applications, always dilute the essential oil using a carrier oil, such as jojoba, to avoid skin irritation. Steam diffusers typically instruct 2-3 drops of essential oil per 3 oz. of water.

Aromatherapy to induce labor is used by some doctors, nurses, and midwives, but not all medical professionals recommend it to their patients. Before you use an essential oil to induce labor, speak to your physician about your medical history, and whether it is the right choice for your delivery.

Clary Sage to Induce Labor

The therapeutic aroma of clary sage essential oil has a smooth, sweet smell which is used in massage oils for menstrual cramp relief; it is also one of the few essential oils that induce labor.

In a large evaluative study, researchers followed 8058 women from 1990-1998 who used aromatherapy during labor and childbirth. The results showed that 525 of these women used essential oils to speed up the labor process, with 80% of women choosing clary sage essential oil to induce labor. Of these women 70% saw success with the essential oils to start labor, and required no further medicinal induction.1

For those wondering how to use clary sage to induce labor, Essential Oil Experts recommends adding 20 drops of the essential oil to 2 oz. of carrier oil, such as sweet almond.

Mix well, and apply topically by massaging into the stomach, soles of the feet, or lower back. This is one of the best essential oils for labor, as it has had the most favorable outcome in inducing.

Lavender to Induce Labor

Two notable benefits of lavender essential oil are its ability to promote relaxation and decrease stress. Both characteristics are helpful in labor inducing essential oils, as relaxation is a known technique to decrease the pain of contractions, and speed up the labor process.

When asked the question, ‘can lavender oil induce labor?’, researchers responded with a 2016 publication in the American Journal of Nursing Sciences; this discussed pain relief and relaxation stimulated by lavender essential oil.

The researchers found that the use of lavender essential oil decreased the duration in the first, second, and third stages of labor when tested on 60 pregnant women. The test used 2 drops of lavender essential oil, diluted with 1.7 oz. of almond carrier oil, and was massaged into the skin.2

Does lavender oil bring on labor? More research is required to identify whether it could be used as an induction agent, but statistics show that lavender essential oil speeds contraction times, and promotes comfort levels during labor.

To use lavender oil in your third trimester to promote a speedy delivery, mix 2 Tbsp. of coconut oil with 4 drops of lavender essential oil. This homemade essential oil cream can be applied topically to the back and abdomen following consent from a doctor.

Rose Oil to Induce Labor

Used in perfumes, and toiletries around the world, rose essential oil is ideal for the late stages of the third trimester, and is considered one of the most effective labor inducing oils.

Like lavender, there is more research required to determine if this is one of the best essential oils to help induce labor, but research has shown that rose essential oil may speed up contractions and reduce the length of labor for pregnant women.

In 2003, two researchers published their findings in the Korean Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology. The publication outlined the effects of rose, clary sage, jasmine, and geranium oil diluted with a carrier, and massaged onto backs of pregnant women every two hours.

The team sought to prove that these essential oils would reduce labor pain and increase relaxation levels; instead, the oils sped contractions and decreased the length of labor significantly in participants.3

Before using any essential oil that induces labor, talk to your doctor to make sure it is a safe alternative to pharmaceutical stimulation.

Essential Oils for Labor

Labor pain is described as incredibly painful, and sometimes unbearable. Doctors may offer relief in the form of an epidural, or a local narcotic. Some women prefer to use essential oils for giving birth to avoid the introduction of chemicals to the unborn child. The use of essential oils for childbirth should be monitored by a medical professional.

Aromatherapy oils for labor and birth are helpful for inducing and speeding up contractions, and can also promote pain relief during labor due to calming and analgesic qualities.

Essential oils childbirth methods include using essential oils via diffusion, massage, candle burning, and bathing products to increase relaxation. If you’re still wondering how to ease labor pain with essential oils, read on below.

Clary Sage and Labor

Clary sage for labor is one of the top aromatherapy childbirth tools for natural pain relief. In a 2000 study, researchers reported results from 8058 women participants over an 8-year period.

Results showed evidence that clary sage and chamomile essential oils were effective at alleviating pain through aromatherapy during labor. The study also suggests that the use of essential oils for pregnancy and labor can reduce fear, anxiety and stress during delivery.4

The above study used skin absorption and inhalation to reap the benefits of clary sage during labor. To create your own natural pain relief with clary sage, add 3 drops of essential oil to 3 oz. of water in a steam diffuser.

Clary sage, and labor inducing essential oils from other plant families, should always be cleared by a medical professional before use. Ask your physician if clary sage essential oil labor enhancers are a good fit for you.

Lavender Oil for Labor

Floral, sweet, and earthy, lavender oil for labor is known to promote relaxation, and speed the delivery process. A 2016 study collected results from 60 pregnant women between the ages of 18 and 25 and found that applying lavender essential oil in the form of a massage, decreased stress levels and pain.2

For your own lavender infused massage during labor, combine 4 drops of lavender essential oil with 8 drops of sweet almond carrier oil. Mix well, and rub into the lower back, abdomen, and feet, after consulting with a doctor.

Jasmine Oil and Labor

The jasmine flower is native to Eurasia, Oceania, and Australia, and produces a unique sharp and sweet smell used in many perfumes. Jasmine essential oil has been shown to provide natural pain relief during labor and may be one of the most effective essential oils for birth.

In a study which focused on primigravida women, (women who are pregnant for the first time), researchers found that using jasmine essential oils during labor decreased pain levels in the first stages. The test on essential oils for labor and delivery included 40 women between the ages of 18 and 30.

The women were split into two groups, with half receiving a back massage using jasmine essential oil. The results concluded that this method of aromatherapy for labor was effective in treating early labor pain.5

To create a labour essential oil blend that combines the power of induction, along with pain relief, combine 2 drops of clary sage essential oil with 2 drops of lavender essential oil, and mix in 8 drops of olive oil.

Massage into the skin during the final stages of the third trimester, following the recommendation of a doctor. Essential oils for postpartum pain can also be implemented using massage or steam diffusion. Never apply essential oils directly to a wound, as some oils can cause irritation and discomfort.

Frankincense Essential Oil for Labor

Formed in the sap of Commiphora and Boswellia trees, one benefit of frankincense essential oil is its ability to naturally reduce pain during labor.

In a 2011 study, researchers applied a mixture of frankincense essential oil and a carrier oil, in the form of massage. Pregnant women received the massage for ten minutes, every hour following a cervical dilation of 5 cm.

Results showed that the use of a frankincense essential oil massage during labor could potentially decrease pain and anxiety levels in mothers.7

Even the best essential oils for labor should never be applied without being diluted with a carrier oil. Before using any of the above essential oils for labor induction, speak to your doctor to determine whether this treatment will work with your medical history.

The application of essential oils for induced labor is not recommended until the end of the third trimester, on or following the due date.

Essential Oils for Cold Sores & Fever Blister

Cold sores are caused by the herpes simplex type 1 virus. It’s estimated that between 50-80% of Americans carry the virus, but some may never experience a cold sore outbreak.1 The virus can be transmitted through physical contact, such as touching or kissing.

Cold sores present themselves in the form of irritated patches of skin, and blisters around the mouth. The first time you experience these symptoms you may also feel swollen lymph nodes, cold and flu symptoms, or headaches.

Generally, these symptoms do not accompany every outbreak; the first is usually the worst.1

Once the herpes simplex virus is contracted, it remains with the individual for life. There is no permanent cure for cold sores, but flare ups of the blisters can be treated through over the counter applications, or naturally at home, with the help of essential oils for cold sores.

Some individuals prefer to use natural remedies for cold sores, rather than turning to pharmaceutical treatments, which may contain harsh chemical ingredients.

Of the various natural or homeopathic cold sore remedies, using essential oils for a cold sore has become increasingly popular because they’re affordable, effective and safe to use topically, when diluted with carrier oils.

What Essential Oil is Good for Cold Sores?

Essential oils for virus treatment, such as herpes simplex type 1, work well because of their antibacterial, antiviral, and anti-inflammatory properties. Not all natural oils for cold sores share the same medicinal properties, or work at the same dosage, which is why it’s important to follow directions during use.

For a closer look at some of the best antiviral essential oils and how to use them on cold sores, read on below.

The Best Essential Oils for Cold Sores are:

Peppermint Essential Oil

Oregano Essential Oil

Tea Tree Essential Oil

Lavender Essential Oil

Lemon Essential Oil

Eucalyptus Essential Oil

Melissa Essential Oil

Thieves Essential Oil

Lemongrass Essential Oil

Peppermint Oil for Cold Sores

Known for its invigorating scent and cooling sensation, peppermint essential oil may provide relief from fever blisters. In a 2003 study, researchers posed the question ‘is peppermint oil good for cold sores?’

When tested in an in vitro laboratory setting, peppermint essential oil demonstrated significant antiviral activity against both herpes simplex type 1 and 2. After 3 hours of incubation, antiviral activity was noted to be as high as 99%.2

Peppermint Cold Sore Recipe

To create your own cold sore peppermint oil treatment, mix 2 drops of peppermint essential oil with 4 drops of olive oil. Apply the mixture to a cotton swab and dab on the cold sore scab.

Do not use this peppermint oil cold sore remedy on open sores. For users looking for a natural treatment, peppermint oil and cold sores go hand in hand. If irritation, burning, or discomfort occurs, seek help from your qualified medical practitioner.

Oregano Oil for Cold Sores

Oregano essential oil’s antiviral properties and natural anti-inflammatory activity make it one of the most effective essential oils for cold sores on lip skin.

In a study published in the Journal of Agriculture and Food Chemistry, a team of researchers discovered that the essential oils from Turkish oregano provided antioxidant, antimicrobial, and antiviral properties.

For a cold sore, oil of oregano may be useful as the extract proved to be a powerful opponent against herpes simplex virus type 1.3

How to Use Oregano on Cold Sores

To use oregano oil for cold sores, dilute 2 drops of oregano essential oil with 4 drops of a carrier oil, such as coconut. Lightly apply the cold sore essential oil remedy to a scabbed blister and massage the mixture with a clean fingertip, being careful not to disturb the scab.

Wash hands thoroughly following application to prevent sharing the infection with others.

Tea Tree Oil for Fever Blisters

One notable benefit of tea tree essential oil is its potent, broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity. A 2001 pilot study used a water-based gel with 6% tea tree essential oil to test its antimicrobial characteristics against cold sores.4

Researchers found that when compared to a placebo treatment, the tea tree essential oil slowed the formation of fever blisters on the mouth.4 In a separate study, tea tree essential oil demonstrated significant antiviral action against both herpes simplex type 1 and type 2.

In viral suspension tests, plaque formations were reduced by 98.2% and 93%, respectively. These studies help support using tea tree essential oil for cold sores as an easy, at-home treatment.

Tea Tree Oil and Coconut Cold Sore Recipe

The best cold sore remedy is one that helps eliminate or improve the appearance of blisters, while moisturizing the afflicted skin. To harness the antimicrobial power of tea tree essential oil at home, try a homemade lip balm.

In a small sealable jar, mix 2 Tbsp. of coconut oil with 5 drops of tea tree essential oil. Apply the blend with a clean finger to any scabs and dry lips. Cold sores and coconut oil remedies work well because of this oil’s ability to nourish the skin around the blister.

Lavender Essential Oil for Cold Sores

Known for its calming and soothing properties, lavender essential oil may also be an effective remedy for cold sore blisters. In a double-blind study, researchers used a lavender essential oil cream on 75 participants with cold sores.

Results show that the use of lavender essential oil on cold sores reduced blister size and healing time significantly. Subjects also reported less pain than usual after use of the lavender essential oil cream.5

Lavender Essential Oil Cold Sore Recipe

To use lavender oil for cold sores, mix 2 drops of lavender essential oil with 4 drops of a carrier oil, such as sweet almond. Apply liberally to blisters once they have scabbed, or use twice weekly before a breakout to prevent blisters from forming as quickly. As with all cold sore essential oil remedies, do not apply to open wounds.

Lemon Essential Oil Cold Sores

Among the many benefits of lemon essential oil, multiple studies have noted its strong antimicrobial properties. A study featured in Botanical Medicine in Clinical Practice, investigated the antiviral effects of lemon essential oil for cold sores, as well as herpes simplex type 2.

Data indicates that after 10 minutes of incubation, lemon essential oil reduced plaque formation of herpes simplex type 1 virus by 90%.9

Using lemon oil for cold sores may help speed up the healing process of the virus during the blister stage.

Does Camphor Help Cold Sores?

Traditionally used to soothe inflammation, there are several useful properties of camphor essential oil including natural pain relief, anti-inflammatory activity and when applied topically, camphor essential oil has a cooling sensation.

When tested against other essential oil remedies for herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1), camphor was found to have strong antiviral capabilities that help inhibit growth of HSV-1.10

Eucalyptus Oil on Cold Sores

With natural analgesic (pain-reliving) and antibacterial qualities, eucalyptus essential oil has recently been investigated for its antiviral properties.

In a 2001 study, eucalyptus and tea tree essential oil were both tested against strains of herpes simplex type 1, and found to be highly efficient in reducing the viral activity.7

Eucalyptus Cold Sore Recipe

For an easy essential oil cold sore remedy, combine 4 drops eucalyptus essential oil with 8 drops of olive oil. Stir the mixture, then dip a cotton swab in the blend and apply directly to scabbed sores.

When using eucalyptus oil for cold sores it’s best to use a cotton swab to avoid further infection. It’s often recommended to use olive oil for cold sores as it’s a gentler carrier oil that will help keep the area moisturized.

Melissa Essential Oil Cold Sores

One valuable quality of melissa essential oil (also known as lemon balm) is its antiviral activity. In a 2008 study, the antiviral characteristics of melissa essential oil were tested against herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) and type 2 (HSV-2).

The results indicate that plaque formation was reduced by 98.8% for HSV-1 and 97.2% for HSV-2. With an increasing amount of drug-resistant viruses, using lemon balm essential oil for cold sores has promising potential against both strains of the herpes virus.8

DIY Natural Melissa Cold Sore Recipe

Melissa oil cold sores remedies can be easily made at home in bulk. Mix 20 drops of melissa essential oil with ½ oz. of carrier oil, such as olive oil. Apply the mixture liberally to the affected site at the first signs of infection.

Thieves for Cold Sores

Thieves oil is an essential oil blend created with cinnamon, clove, rosemary, lemon, and eucalyptus. Thieves essential oil has been noted for its antimicrobial, antibacterial, antiviral and anti-fungal properties.

Some users suggest that these combined benefits make it the best natural cold sore remedy for topical use.9

Lemongrass Essential Oil for Cold Sores

With significant antiviral properties, lemongrass essential oil may be used as a natural treatment for cold sores. When tested against in vitro samples of the herpes simplex type 1 virus, lemongrass inhibited replication of the virus at only 0.1% concentration.6

Lemongrass Essential Oil Recipe for Cold Sores

Lemongrass is another essential oil fever blister remedy which works well as a lip balm. To use this essential oil cold sore remedy at home, add 5 drops of lemongrass essential oil to 2 Tbsp. of coconut oil and mix well in a small, sealed container.

Apply the solution to clean dry skin, and allow the mixture to absorb naturally.

Cold Sore Remedies at Home

While there’s no way to completely stop cold sores from returning once you’ve encountered the herpes simplex virus, using a natural treatment for cold sores may help reduce their severity.

Creating your own homemade recipe for cold sores is easy and allows users to mix their favorite essential oils into one effective blend.

To create a preventative face wash, combine 8 drops of lemon essential oil, 8 drops of eucalyptus essential oil, ¾ cup of water, ¼ cup of castile liquid soap, 4 drops of vitamin E oil, and ½ Tsp. of jojoba oil.

Mix well and pour into a clean soap dispenser or foaming soap bottle. You can swap lemon and eucalyptus for lavender and peppermint essential oils for an equally aromatic cleansing experience, with potent cold sore fighting power.

If any DIY cold sore remedy causes an allergic reaction or skin irritation, halt treatment immediately and speak to a physician. Individuals with sensitive skin should always conduct a patch test before applying natural cold sore remedies to cold sores.

When using essential oil fever blister remedies near your mouth, be careful not to accidentally ingest them.

Essential Oils for Constipation, Diarrhea, Gas, and Bloating

Essential oils for digestive problems have a long history in traditional medicine and are used to relieve the discomfort associated with constipation, diarrhea, gas, bloating, stomach cramps and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

The benefit of using of essential oils as digestive aids is that they can relieve a wide range of symptoms. Essential oils for digestion that have scientifically proven benefits are peppermint, pepper basil, fennel, oregano, and ginger.

The safe ways to use essential oils to relieve digestive complaints are by inhaling an essential oil in the form of aromatherapy or by applying the oil topically, such as in a massage oil. Both oregano and peppermint oil for digestion products are available commercially as enteric-coated capsules.

Essential Oils for Constipation

Constipation is difficulty emptying the bowels and is commonly associated with hardened stools. Constipation leaves you feeling uncomfortable and can result in abdominal pain.

Most home remedies for constipation and IBS include peppermint essential oil, which is often considered the best essential oil for constipation as it helps relieve several symptoms.

However, what essential oil is good for constipation may be in fact a combination of oils. For example, aromatherapy combines peppermint essential oil with several oils for effective constipation relief.

The Best Essential Oils for Constipation are:

Peppermint Essential Oil

Lemon Essential Oil

Rosemary Essential Oil

Peppermint Oil for Constipation

Of the essential oils used for digestion complaints, peppermint essential oil has undergone the most scientific investigation. Peppermint essential oil capsules have proven to be effective for constipation, diarrhea, gas, bloating, and stomach cramps associated with irritable bowel syndrome.1,2

Scientific research has shown that an aromatherapy abdominal massage using peppermint essential oil, lemon essential oil, and rosemary essential oil was effective in relieving constipation among the elderly.

The essential oil combination proved to be better than a regular abdominal massage, and effects lasted up to two weeks after the massage therapy ceased.3 Consult a doctor before using essential oils for constipation in children.

Essential Oils for Diarrhea

Most people use the term diarrhea to refer to loose stools, but the clinical definition is more than three bowel movements in a day. Diarrhea can be caused by a range of infectious agents, such as viruses and bacteria, digestive disorders such as IBS, food poisoning, or as a side effect of some prescription drugs.4

What essential oil is good for diarrhea will depend on the symptoms and severity of diarrhea. The best essential oil for diarrhea will be one that has antispasmodic and antimicrobial properties and the ability to reduce bowel inflammation.

The Best Essential Oils for Diarrhea are:

Peppermint Essential Oil

Ginger Essential Oil

Pepper Basil Essential Oil

Peppermint Oil for Diarrhea

Peppermint essential oil has long been used as a natural remedy for diarrhea.5 Regarding scientific research on diarrhea, essential oil treatment uses peppermint in the form of enteric-coated capsules.6

Peppermint oil and its active ingredient L-menthol, act by soothing the muscles of the small bowel and regulating stool transit time in people suffering from diarrhea-predominant IBS.5

Note: Essential oils in enteric-coated capsules are specially prepared to prevent the oils from being released directly into the stomach. The ingestion of non-enteric coated essential oils can cause heartburn, further exacerbating digestive problems and therefore is not recommended.7

Ginger Oil for Diarrhea

Ginger has been used for centuries as one of the top essential oils for digestion problems. Ginger essential oil acts by regulating the movement of the intestines. Promising scientific research with animal test subjects shows that ginger essential oil may help regulate the flow of food through the gut.8

Pepper Basil Oil for Diarrhea

Pepper basil essential oil (Ocimum selloi) has potential to be one of the effective digestive essential oils. Pepper basil acts in a similar way as peppermint and ginger essential oils, by reducing gut spasms.

Although research has yet to be conducted on human subjects, so far, scientific research has demonstrated that green pepper basil essential oil significantly reduced diarrhea episodes in animal test subjects.9

Essential Oils for Gas and Bloating

Good essential oils for bloating are those that aid the movement of digestive gases through the system. Effective essential oils for gas help to relieve the discomfort associated with bloating.

Essential oils such as fennel and peppermint offer a natural remedy for the symptoms of gas and bloating. Essential oils for flatulence can be prepared in the form of massage oil.

To prepare a recipe using essential oil for gas pain or flatulence, add one drop of either fennel or peppermint oil to ten drops of a good carrier oil like coconut or argan. Gently massage on the abdomen using a circular motion.

The Best Essential Oils for Gas and Bloating are:

Fennel Essential Oil

Peppermint Essential Oil

Oregano Essential Oil

Fennel for Gas

A scientific study on fennel and bloating symptoms suggested that fennel essential oil is an effective natural remedy. The study found that anethole, the active component of fennel essential oil, has a carminative and antispasmodic effect that relaxes the smooth muscles of the intestines.10

Another study with IBS patients showed that fennel essential oil decreased abdominal pain.11

Peppermint Oil Flatulence

Scientific research suggests that you can use peppermint oil for bloating. Using peppermint oil for gas may be effective because it helps relax the smooth muscles of the intestines, so that painful digestive gases can pass through more quickly.

In one study, 57 patients with IBS were given enteric-coated peppermint oil capsules. After four weeks of treatment, 75% of the patients experienced a reduction in abdominal bloating and the passage of gas.12

Oil of Oregano Gas and Bloating

Oregano essential oil has an anti-spasmodic and anti-inflammatory effect and has been used in ancient China, Egypt, and Greece as a digestive aid. Oregano essential oil is said to relieve gas and bloating by soothing the motion of the intestines.

Scientists are beginning to explore the effects of oregano essential oil on colitis (inflammation of the lining of the colon) in animal models with positive preliminary results.13

Essential Oils for Stomach Cramps

Essential oils good for upset stomach help to control the symptoms of digestive stress. The effective essential oils for upset stomach are those that have antispasmodic, anti-inflammatory and antiemetic (anti-nausea) effects on the colon and gastric lining, thus reducing symptoms such as cramps, pain, nausea and vomiting.

Using essential oils for stomach pain can relieve the build-up of painful gas in the intestines. Essential oils for stomach ache can also control irregular movements of the intestines.

For those who wonder what essential oils are good for upset stomach symptoms, peppermint and fennel essential oils are often at the top of the list. Peppermint essential oil helps to calm the muscles of the stomach while fennel essential oil promotes the elimination of gas from the digestive system.

Peppermint Oil for Stomach

As a general digestive aid, peppermint for stomach pain has been used for years.2 You can use peppermint oil for stomach cramps and other symptoms of stomach distress. In scientific research, the use of peppermint oil for stomach problems has mostly been in the area of IBS.1

Using peppermint oil for stomach ache symptoms is an effective remedy because it reduces stomach motility (spontaneous movement) and relaxes the gall bladder.14

Peppermint Essential Oil Recipe for Upset Stomach

For those who are interested in how to use peppermint for stomach ache symptoms, one of the best methods is as an aromatherapy massage. The massage oil can be prepared by mixing 2 drops of peppermint essential oil with 10 drops of carrier oil, such as jojoba oil.

Massage the stomach gently with the oil using a circular motion.

Essential Oils for IBS

Scientific research on essential oils for irritable bowel syndrome has offered promising results, particularly with peppermint oil.5 The research suggests that enteric-coated peppermint oil is well tolerated and has few adverse effects.

Peppermint essential oil may reduce the symptoms of IBS by relaxing the muscles of the small intestines and gall bladder and regulating the movement of the small intestines.5,14

Peppermint Essential Oil for IBS

One study on 72 patients with moderate to severe IBS has demonstrated that peppermint essential oil in the form of enteric-coated capsules has successfully reduced IBS symptoms.

The researchers compared a group of IBS patients taking the enteric-coated peppermint oil capsules with a group of IBS patients taking a placebo and found that the experimental group taking the peppermint oil capsules experienced a greater improvement in their IBS symptoms.6

Note: Women who are pregnant or nursing should not use peppermint essential oil without first consulting a health care provider. Anyone who has a gallbladder disorder, a blocked bile duct, or who takes heartburn medication should not take peppermint essential oil without first consulting a healthcare provider.

Essential Oils for Cold, Flu, Cough and Sinus Infection

Though the flu and the common cold can often be confused due to some of their similar symptoms, they are in fact two separate viral infections that require different treatments.

Both the flu and a cold can last for up to seven days, though the flu can sometimes linger for three to four weeks and can also develop into more serious respiratory conditions such as pneumonia.1

When determining whether your symptoms are indicative of a flu or a cold, always make sure to check in with a certified physician. Though a common cold (caused by the adenovirus or coronavirus) can improve on its own with time and rest, if you have the flu (caused by the influenza virus), there are certain vaccinations or antiviral medications that may be prescribed by a doctor to prevent further developments.1

The Top Essential Oils for Cold, Flu, Coughs and Sinus Infection are:

Peppermint Essential Oil

Tea Tree Essential Oil

Thieves Essential Oil

Lemon Essential Oil

Lavender Essential Oil

Oregano Essential Oil

The most common symptoms of a cold include a runny nose, congestion, and a sore or itchy throat with cough.2 Flu symptoms often include the latter symptoms, but are accompanied by muscle and joint aching, fever or chills, headaches, and fatigue.1

Complications associated with the cold and flu can lead to upper respiratory infections such as bacterial sinusitis and strep throat, and the flu can lead to lower respiratory infections in the lungs that can lead to pneumonia and bronchitis.3

While taking medications to cure these symptoms can be crucial, for those wishing to complement their treatment with alternative methods, or for those who may not be able to take certain antibiotics, using essential oils for the flu is a natural way to address uncomfortable symptoms.

Essential oils for colds have been used for years in aromatherapy for their antimicrobial, antifungal and anti-inflammatory properties. Today, essential oils are even used in over-the-counter medications for their fantastic cold-fighting properties.

The practice of using essential oils for flu symptoms can not only help treat the condition, but also help manage stress and improve fatigue that often accompanies being sick. The following is a list of the best essential oils for sickness symptoms related to the cold and flu.

Essential Oils for Cough

Coughing is the body’s natural response to fighting infection in the lungs by expelling any microbes and other foreign particles found in the respiratory tract. Though coughing can be a voluntary way to reject mucus, it can also be an involuntary reflex when the nerves in the larynx and respiratory tract are affected by infections and other irritants.

When this happens, the muscles in the chest, abdomen and diaphragm contract, resulting in the release of air from the epiglottis, which produces a hacking sound.3

Coughing occurs in response to numerous factors and health complications, but is a tell-tale sign of the presence of a cold or flu. This is due to postnasal drip, an excess amount of mucus that builds up and ends up dripping down the back of the throat.

You can tell if you have a postnasal drip if decongestants and nasal irrigations do not work.3 For this reason, using essential oils for mucus in throat passage ways is a natural method to help suppress a cough.

For years, essential oils for coughs have been useful in alternative medicine because of their antimicrobial properties. While some studies have involved ingestion of essential oils for mucus control in patients with upper respiratory tract infections, Essential Oil Experts does not recommend ingesting them unless told to do so by a qualified professional.

When treating symptoms including a cough, essential oil products are best used in a diffuser, as massage oil, in a bath or by steam inhalation. We’ve assembled the best essential oils to diffuse for cough relief and the treatment of other cold and flu symptoms.

What essential oils are good for cough suppression?

Some of the best essential oils for sore throat and cough include peppermint essential oil, tea tree essential oil, thieves essential oil, lemon essential oil, lavender essential oil and oregano essential oil.

Lemon Essential Oil for Colds, Congestion and Sinus Infections

Lemon essential oil for cough suppression is another effective natural remedy. Known for its energizing, antimicrobial, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, lemon essential oil is ideal for cough and congestion relief.

When using lemon essential oil for colds, it’s best used in a diffuser, but can also be diluted with carrier oil and applied topically.

Lavender Essential Oil for Cough and Colds

Lavender has been used for centuries to induce sleep and relaxation. Due to its analgesic properties and antibacterial agents, lavender oil for cold and cough symptoms can help treat the flu and sinus congestion.

It is one of the best essential oils for phlegm relief, and can be applied topically to the throat and chest when diluted with carrier oil.

Oregano Essential Oil for Coughs and Sinus Infections

One of the best essential oils for whooping cough is oregano essential oil. With potent antibacterial and expectorant (mucus-clearing) properties, using oregano essential oil for colds is ideal for treating dry throats and irritation.

Whooping cough is a contagious bacterial infection that occurs in the upper respiratory tract, and is known to affect children and teenagers even after inoculation.7 For safe use, make a chest rub using 15 drops of oregano oil with 1 oz. of carrier oil and apply to the chest area before bed.

Essential Oils for Toddler Cough or Sinus

There can be numerous possibilities for why your toddler is coughing—with some being more serious than others. Because coughing is extremely common in children, who may have up to 12 respiratory tract infections every year, it may be difficult to determine their severity.8 If you are ever concerned, do not hesitate to contact a medical professional.

Because commercial cough remedies are not always useful for treating a child’s cold, natural remedies can be made at home using essential oils. The use of lavender essential oil has been shown to be safe for young ones experiencing colic, which causes crying and spasms.

With anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, and sedative properties, lavender essential oil has also been shown to reduce airway inflammation in asthma models.9,13 Considered one of the top essential oils for baby cough, using lavender oil for colds is generally found to be safe when a very small amount is used in a humidifier.

Always keep essential oils out of reach of children, and make sure they are not used around or inside their nose. Certain essential oils are irritants to the skin and should not be used on children, including peppermint and eucalyptus essential oil.

Never apply essential oils to the skin of children under 6 months old. For cold symptoms that do not improve or get worse, contact a health care professional, and discontinue use immediately.

Essential Oils for Sinus Infection

Sinus infections affect around 31 million Americans, and are often mistaken for a common cold due to their similar symptoms. They are more prevalent in people with weakened immune systems, allergies causing inflammation of the sinuses, or structural blockages in the nasal area.

Symptoms include nasal congestion, sinus headaches, and excess mucus—but unlike a cold, often require powerful antibiotics to kill the bacterial infection. 10 Using essential oils for sinus infections are a natural alternative to over-the-counter decongestants that may not be suitable for some people.

In the case of chronic sinusitis (a sinus disease that is recurring or constant), extensive and painful surgery is another option. For those living with chronic sinus pain, the symptoms can be debilitating.

Sinus headaches, tooth pain, fever and fatigue are all common symptoms, though they can also be confused for rhinitis—a similar sinus disease of the nasal cavity.10

Perhaps the best essential oil for sinus infection relief is peppermint oil, thanks to its cooling aroma and antiviral compounds. Menthol, which is now used in nasal sprays, cough syrup and cough drops, is a natural extract found in peppermint essential oil, and has been used for decades to alleviate ailments of the nose and throat.

For sinus infection remedies, it is best used for relief of sinus headaches caused by pressure from backed up phlegm and mucus and the narrowing of inflamed membranes.4,5,11 Because peppermint oil for sinus infection should not be ingested, it is best to use in a diffuser or by steam inhalation.

Essential Oils for Congestion

Congestion is the broad medical term that encompasses cold and flu symptoms that produce the stuffy and backed-up feeling of mucus and phlegm build-up in the throat, ears, nose, and lungs.

Congestion can be caused by allergies, viruses and other pathogens, and can lead to painful headaches and uncomfortable runny or stuffed noses. For treatment, use of an essential oil, decongestant, or antibiotic is usually an effective way of relieving the pressure. Essential oils for colds and congestion are a safe way to reduce inflammation in the nose.

However, using an essential oil for congestion-related complaints can often have additional benefits, compared to traditional medicine.

The best essential oil for congestion involving the sinuses is peppermint oil; for congestion resulting in serious sinus headaches, peppermint contains menthol properties, proven to aid congestion.4,5,11 For this reason, it’s also considered one of the most effective essential oils for head congestion.

As one of the top essential oils for ear congestion, rosemary essential oil’s properties help clear congested airways or nasal passages and equalize air pressure in the Eustachian tubes connected to the nose.

With antibacterial and pain-relieving qualities, rosemary essential oil can be added to a diffuser, an aromatic bath or directly inhaled to relieve congestion. For a pleasant aroma, combine 2 drops each of rosemary and lavender oil for congestion in a diffuser for up to 30 minutes.

Essential Oils for Sinus Congestion

Most commonly, congestion is used to describe sinus congestion—or the feeling of fullness in the face.12 As mentioned above, sinus congestion related to sinusitis can be exceptionally uncomfortable, but can be overlooked or over-treated with antibiotics.

To help alleviate some of the swelling in the lining of the mucous membranes, one essential oil for nasal congestion is peppermint oil for sinus soothing. Menthol produces a cooling sensation that—though may not cure congestion long term—will certainly reduce headache pain and around the eyes.

Other effective essential oils for sinus pain include tea tree essential oil, eucalyptus essential oil and lavender essential oil. Eucalyptus may be the best essential oil for sinus congestion, thanks to its antibacterial, anti-allergen, pain-relieving properties and ability to clear inflamed nasal passage ways.

Other essential oils to clear sinuses may include oregano essential oil, which has potent antifungal and antiviral properties.

When using lavender oil, sinus congestion may be relieved when used with steam inhalation. To use lavender essential oil for sinus congestion, add 2-4 drops of lavender essential oil to a steaming bowl of hot water, cover your head with a towel and inhale.

For users wondering how to use peppermint oil for sinuses, it can be used in an aromatherapy bath, by topical application or in a diffuser. Steam inhalation can also be enhanced with peppermint oil, and sinuses will feel less inflamed and constricted.

Peppermint essential oil should always be diluted with a carrier oil before topical application. Do not place peppermint essential oil inside the nasal cavity.

Essential Oils for Chest Congestion

Chest congestion is also a symptom of a cold or flu, but can develop into much more serious conditions if left untreated. Congestion in this area involves excessive mucus in the lower airway that may restrict airflow to the lungs. Bacterial infections may be the cause for chest congestion, and may require medical treatment.4

An essential oil for chest congestion relief known for its antibacterial and antifungal properties is eucalyptus oil. Chest congestion is often treated with expectorants that get rid of excess mucus, but eucalyptus essential oil for colds is used in many over-the-counter medications, and can simply be used on its own.

In the case of congestion related to allergens, eucalyptus essential oil has for years been the subject of studies examining its effects on allergic reactions.

Tea tree oil for chest congestion is another option. Either essential oil can be used with regular inhalation via diffuser to address chronic conditions or asthma related issues. They can also be used to prevent painful coughs by dilution in a carrier oil and sparing application to the chest twice a day.

While tea tree oil is less toxic than eucalyptus, neither should be taken orally. To use these essential oils for bronchial congestion (inflammation affecting the bronchial passage to the lungs), a few drops can be added to a bath, or used in the steam of a shower.

Essential Oils for Stuffy Nose

Using essential oils for blocked nose congestion is a safe and natural way of addressing unwelcome cold and flu symptoms. When deciding what essential oils are good for stuffy noses and sore or itchy throats caused by post-nasal drip, any of the previously mentioned essential oils have proven benefits.

Because it’s commonly found in over-the-counter medications, eucalyptus oil for cold symptoms may be the best essential oil for stuffy nose as it is well-known for its antibacterial properties and ability to calm inflamed nasal passage ways.

Inhaling Essential Oils for a Stuffy Nose

When experiencing a stuffy nose, eucalyptus essential oil can be applied to a cotton ball or handkerchief and inhaled directly. Another way to strengthen essential oil vapor is to use a nebulizing diffuser.

This new type of diffuser does not require oil dilution with water, and will increase the oils ability to control a stuffy nose, as well as cold, flu, and congestion symptoms.

An Intro to Essential Oils for Tooth Pain, Whitening and Grinding

Tooth pain and problems can get in the way of daily living. Simple tasks such as eating and drinking can turn into painful chores. While some types of pain may be easily healed, others can quickly become much worse if no efforts are made to get to the root of the problem.

There are many different ways to get rid of tooth pain, however using essential oils for teeth may prove to be a powerful all-natural option.

Not all tooth issues are bad, though. Teeth whitening is a popular treatment for many, though it can be costly and abrasive to the teeth. Essential oils may offer an all-natural and safe solution for the teeth whitening process, as well as relieve pain.

In fact, using essential oils for oral care may be an effective and affordable solution no matter your issue.

Essential Oils for Tooth Pain

Tooth pain can come from a variety of causes, however, many of them can be traced back to an excess of bacteria, which often causes inflammation and pain. If left untreated, the bacteria can lead to tooth decay or infection.1 Essential oils for tooth infection or decay may help eliminate the problem in a safe and natural way.

Finding the best essential oils for dental care depends on your particular symptoms and ailments. No matter which essential oils for tooth decay you choose, they will all likely first treat bacterial growth and inflammation.

Using essential oils for toothache pain must be done with caution, though. Never ingest essential oils and always apply carefully. Read the instructions carefully and stop using essential oils for oral health if more pain or irritation is caused.

How to Use Clove Oil for Tooth Infection

The potent antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties of clove essential oil have been long recommended as a powerful ingredient for all-natural mouthwash. According to one study, patients who used clove essential oil in their mouthwash had reduced plaque after four weeks of use.2 Because of its known antimicrobial and plaque-fighting qualities, it serves as one of the best essential oils for tooth infection.

To make an antiseptic essential oil mouth rinse, mix 20 drops of clove essential oil with 1 cup of water. Shake vigorously and then take a small amount into your mouth. Swish the mixture around your mouth for 15 to 30 seconds and spit out into sink. Repeat daily.

How to Use Peppermint Oil for Toothache

Using peppermint oil for teeth can be especially helpful for toothaches related to nerve pain. One notable benefit of peppermint essential oil is that it can soothe nerve pain when applied topically.

It also has antiviral, antimicrobial, and antioxidant properties that may help reduce any potential infection that could be causing pain. The cooling sensation of peppermint essential oil may also provide numbing relief when applied topically.

To use peppermint essential oil for your toothache, add 10 drops of the oil to 1 cup of water and shake vigorously. Use as a mouthwash and swish around in your mouth for several minutes. Spit the liquid out into the sink, being careful not to ingest any of the essential oil.

When it comes to essential oils for infected tooth or gums, eucalyptus essential oil should be at the top of the list. Two benefits of eucalyptus essential oil include its natural antibacterial and pain-relieving qualities.

When tested against common microorganisms, eucalyptus essential oil proved to be a powerful disinfectant against several types of bacteria.

A 2013 study showed that simply inhaling eucalyptus essential oil could significantly reduce pain among knee surgery patients. To use eucalyptus essential oil to combat pain, add 3 to 5 drops into a diffuser and inhale the oil for 30 minutes, daily.

Thieves Oil to Treat Toothaches

Thieves oil is a combination of several essential oils, including clove essential oil, cinnamon essential oil, eucalyptus essential oil, rosemary essential oil, and lemon essential oil.

Many people recommend thieves oil for toothache symptoms because the combination of oils brings powerful antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties that can both kill infection and numb the pain.

Cinnamon Oil for Toothaches

Cinnamon essential oil makes a good antiseptic, thanks to its antimicrobial activity. When applied to bacteria colonies, cinnamon bark essential oil has also been shown to reduce bacteria within 48 hours.

In fact, it’s no coincidence that many popular chewing gums come with cinnamon as a main ingredient. Cinnamon essential oil effectively combats dental plaque, especially when combined with clove essential oil.2 Many consider brushing teeth with cinnamon essential oil an effective anti-plaque technique.
